Eligibility rules in short

  • com.au / net.au — you must hold an ABN, ACN or Australian trade mark, and be commercially trading.
  • org.au / asn.au — for incorporated associations, charities and non-profits.
  • id.au — for Australian individuals only.
  • Direct .au (yourname.au) — open to any registrant with an Australian presence.
  • Every licence needs a 'close and substantial connection' between the domain and your business, product or activity. Licences are leases, not ownership.

How to register

  1. 1. Confirm eligibility and have your ABN/ACN ready — it is recorded against the licence.
  2. 2. Search availability on the official auDA WHOIS.
  3. 3. Register through an auDA-accredited registrar (the list below is the only authoritative one).
  4. 4. Supply the exact ABN/ACN entity name — a mismatch with the ABR can void the licence.
  5. 5. Keep registrant contact details current; auDA policy requires accurate data.

Complaints and disputes

  • auDRP — the formal dispute process to recover a .au domain registered in bad faith that is confusingly similar to your name or trade mark.
  • auDA complaints — for policy breaches, false eligibility data and misleading registrations.
  • Registrar complaint — escalate to your registrar first for billing, transfer and renewal disputes.
